Could be the key wasn't inserted 100% so the ignition switch wasn't turning
over fully?

If the engine is very hot (and it would be in hot weather after riding home
from work 60+ miles!) then it was probably just "running on". The cylinder
is so hot the remaining fuel in the chamber keeps combusting even though
there is no spark going in. I've seen this happen a few times with my
Savage and my car, but only after the engine has been running a long time on
a hot day.

Wow. That is a lot of mileage for any bike, never mind a little 650
thumper.
